Billy Twomey started his equestrian career in his family’s riding school in Cork. Despite contemplating a career as a jockey as a teenager, he took a big step and went to Holland to train with Olympic medalist, Albert Voorn. After spending time here, he then decided to move to England where he became stable jockey to Michael Whitaker, International showjumper and Olympic medalist.
He quickly progressed on the showjumping circuit to top level competition, going on to represent Ireland at Grand Prix and Nations Cup level. Going from strenght to strenght, Billy Twomey has proven that is one of the best Irish riders of all time. A little less present on the international events, he is still one of the rider Ireland can count on for the major events. He is also a rider the young generation looks up to, just like Bertram Allen, whom has been working close to him during his debuts.
That doesn't mean that Billy has left the international shows and has lost his appetite for victories, quite the opposite ! He has shown that he is still determined to keep his career on a successful track, as he finished third of the Longines Grand Prix of the Longines Masters of Paris to conclude his great 2015 season. With his young horses, he can focus on the futur and keep in mind his dreams of championships.
